5 Tips For Optimizing Your Home Theater Speaker Placement

Are you in the process of building your home theater, and are finally working on the sound system? Once you have purchased all of the components, the next step is to install them all. However, speaker placement can make a big difference in the sound you experience. Here are some tips for getting your home theater speaker placement just right.

Pick The Ideal Listening Position

Every seat in a home theater isn't going to be optimized for sound, but you likely have that one main seat where you plan on sitting every single time. This should be the position that you plan for as your ideal listening position. Set your speakers up according to this position, rather than accommodating for the entire room.

Place The Center Speaker

The role of the center speaker is to deliver clear dialogue to you. The placement needs to be directly in the front part of the room, either above or below the TV. The speaker should be pointing towards that main seat so that the dialogue is not bouncing off other surfaces.

Place The Stereo Speakers

The speakers located to the left and right of the TV are the stereo speakers, and they need to be placed at an equal distance apart from your main seat. The ideal position of the stereo speakers is to be at ear level, which may require an adjustable stand so that you can raise the height of the speaker to be just right. As tempting as it may be to place the speakers on a nearby shelf or mount them at the top of the room, they are not going to produce the best sound in that position.

Place The Surround Speakers

Your two speakers located behind the seating area are the surround speakers, and they help provide that immersive sound of objects traveling around you. These speakers should also be pointing toward the main seat and as close to ear level as possible. Place them the same distance apart from each other as the stereo speakers, which will help ensure that all the sounds hit your ears at the precise time.

Place The Subwoofer

The subwoofer is one speaker that you have a lot of flexibility with when it comes to its placement. It all depends on the nearby surfaces that the bass is bouncing off of and how intense you want the bass to be. You may like the subwoofer located directly behind the main seat or placed further away in the corner of the room for less intense bass.
